The Loudoun County Animal Shelter was awarded custody of 48 horses on January 30, 2008.
Some of the horses are already available for adoption and fostering. Adoption applications have priority so the horses do not have to move multiple times.
A couple of the horses have had additional people come forward claiming ownership interest, so adoptions will be run on a "foster-to-adopt" basis while ownership issues are worked out.
The County is working with regional rescues and government agencies to quickly get up to speed on how to manage such an alarming number of seized horses.
Volunteers are needed in mass to assist in the care of so many horses.
The County is also gratefully accepting cash donations which can be earmaked specifically for the care of the horses by noting on your check "for the horse fund".
Please spread the word. The County needs help. While, they are doing a fantastic job, they are not set up to handle this many horses. They really want to get as many of the broodmares fostered or adopted out prior to foaling into homes with experience foaling out horses.
